China's Belt and Road Initiative: Plan for domination or strategy for crisis? The crisis is the overcapacity problem that is now the key drag on the Chinese economy, forcing balance sheets of state owned enterprises (SOEs) into the red, and making their survival dependent on the permanent infusion of funds from the state banks, resulting in even more massive indebtedness.Indeed, owing to massive overcapacity, many enterprises now can't make a profit on the domestic market. Utilizing China's surplus capacity to produce for foreign markets in order to make its industries profitable is the key drive behind the BRI. As analyst Lee Jones puts it, the BRI "is not some new invention of Xi Jinping…[It] is really a rebranding exercise, or a fresh spur, to a process of externalization of surplus construction capacity that has been happening for well over a decade."(...)In sum, rather than a grand plan, the BRI is better seen as:1.- a not too coherent package of infrastructure building;2.- clothed with high-flying visionary rhetoric;3.- meant to externalize China's surplus capacity crisis;4.- driven by competition and conflicts among local authorities, SOEs, and national ministries that spill over into the international arena; and5.- one that exports not only China's surplus capacity but its factional political contradictions and its environmental crisis.Marked by contradictions, BRI is a grandiose remnant of 20th century technocratic imperialism that is, like many of its predecessors, likely to fall flat on its face.

Boeing Capsule Goes Off Course, Won't Dock at Space StationPosted by msmash on Friday December 20, 2019 @11:05AM from the how-about-that dept.pgmrdlm shares a report:CitarBoeing's new Starliner capsule went off course after launch Friday and won't dock with the International Space Station during its first test flight. It was supposed to be a crucial dress rehearsal for next year's inaugural launch with astronauts. The blastoff from Cape Canaveral, Florida, went flawlessly as the Atlas V rocket lifted off with the Starliner capsule. But a half-hour into the flight, Boeing reported that the capsule didn't get into the right orbit to reach the space station. The capsule is still in space and will be brought back to Earth, landing in New Mexico as early as Sunday. Boeing is one of two companies hired by NASA to launch astronauts from the U.S. The space agency has been relying on Russian rockets to travel to the space station since the retirement of the space shuttle almost nine years ago. [...] This was Boeing's chance to catch up with SpaceX, NASA's other commercial crew provider that successfully completed a similar demonstration last March. SpaceX has one last hurdle -- a launch abort test -- before carrying two NASA astronauts in its Dragon capsule, possibly by spring.

Volkswagon Has 'massive' Software Problems With New ID3 Electric VehiclesPosted by BeauHD on Friday December 20, 2019 @06:20PM from the no-surprise dept.Socguy shares a report from Electrek:CitarGermany's Manager Magazine reports today that Volkswagen is struggling with software problems for its ID3 all-electric car. According to the report, the ID3 will be built for months with an incomplete software architecture that could affect up to 20,000 electric cars. These units, intended for sales in Europe and not the U.S., will require a manual software update. The nature of the software problem -- how it affects vehicles or the sales timeline -- was not disclosed. The magazine reported the issue as "massive." And unfortunately, the fix is cumbersome. Thousands of ID3 cars will be parked in dedicated rented spaces until the spring when service teams will be deployed with mobile computer stations. New software will be manually installed in this manner for the first 10,000 or so ID3s. A total of 20,000 ID3 vehicles will need to be reworked until the second wave of production begins in May. At that time, further software updates can be deployed over-the-air.

No puedes esperar nada.

Nord Stream 2: Trump approves sanctions on Russia gas pipelinePresident Donald Trump has signed a law that will impose sanctions on any firm that helps Russia's state-owned gas company, Gazprom, finish a pipeline into the European Union. The sanctions target firms building Nord Stream 2, an undersea pipeline that will allow Russia to increase gas exports to Germany. The US considers the project a security risk to Europe. Both Russia and the EU have strongly condemned the US sanctions.Congress voted through the measures as part of a defence bill last week and the legislation, which described the pipeline as a "tool of coercion", was signed off by Mr Trump on Friday.(...)The Trump administration fears the pipeline will tighten Russia's grip over Europe's energy supply and reduce its own share of the lucrative European market for American liquefied natural gas.
Ukraine and Russia sign deal to continue gas supply to EuropeRussia and Ukraine signed a protocol late on Friday agreeing terms for the transit of gas to Europe, bringing forward the long-awaited renewal of a deal due to expire at the end of the year. A stand-off between the two countries had threatened to disrupt supplies to Europe when the existing contract expires on December 31. Ukraine is a key transit route for Russian gas to Europe, an arrangement that earns the nation some $3bn annually.Earlier on Friday, European natural gas prices had fallen sharply after the two sides reached a provisional deal to allow the continued transit of gas to Europe in the new year.
Trump signs $1.4 trillion spending package, averting shutdownPresident Trump on Friday signed two spending packages totaling $1.4 trillion, averting a government shutdown at midnight. The bills included all 12 annual appropriations bills for the 2020 fiscal year that started Oct. 1. They also included a slew of tax cuts, extending expiring and expired tax breaks and eliminating other taxes that amount to an additional $426 billion in lost revenue, bringing the total cost of the bill to more than $1.8 trillion.
Below-the-Surface Struggles in Manhattan Housing Bust Seep to the Surface That the Manhattan market for condos and co-ops has been heading lower is no secret. The number of closed sales fell 14.2% from a year ago to 2,592 units. The only price category that saw a year-over-year sales increase (+4.8%) was the below-$500,000 category. In all other price categories, sales fell. In the above-$5-million category, sales collapsed by 42.9%.Months’ supply of listed inventory – not including unsold units that have been pulled, as we’ll see in a moment – rose 22.9% year-over-year to 8.6 months. And this has occurred despite a steep decline in mortgage rates over the 12-month period.
