US existing home sales fall below 4mn for first time since 2010

US existing home sales fell for a fourth consecutive month in September, dipping below the 4mn annualised rate mark for the first time in 13 years owing to high mortgage rates and low availability.

Sales of previously occupied residences declined to a seasonally adjusted annualised rate of 3.96mn in September, down 2 per cent from the prior month and 15.4 per cent from a year earlier. Economists expected 3.89mn sales.

“The Federal Reserve simply cannot keep raising interest rates in light of softening inflation and weakening job gains”, National Association of Realtors chief economist Lawrence Yun said.

Existing home prices increased for the third straight month as housing supply continued to be squeezed.

London-listed M&G to close £565mn property fund after outflows

Fund manager M&G will close its £565mn property fund after outflows by UK retail investors exiting the ailing real estate market.

The London-listed asset manager said it would close the fund due to “declining interest” among UK retail investors. M&G has halted trading in the fund’s shares and, subject to regulatory approval, will sell its assets in an effort to return cash to clients.

The fund paused trading in December 2019 after outflows by customers worried about Brexit. It reopened in May 2021 with around £2.1bn in assets and has since shrunk to £565mn.

The closure is another sign of stress for daily dealing property funds, which have suffered outflows as high interest rates and inflation pile pressure on the property sector.

Nokia To Axe Up To 14,000 Jobs To Cut Costs

Finnish telecoms giant Nokia is to axe between 9,000 and 14,000 jobs by the end of 2026 to cut costs. From a report:

The announcement was made as the company reported a 20% drop in sales between July and September. The company blamed slowing demand for 5G equipment in markets such as North America. It currently has 86,000 employees around the world, and has axed thousands of jobs since 2015. Nokia wants to cut costs by between $845m and $1.27bn by 2026, it said.

Its customers have been cutting spending amid high inflation and interest rates, it said. Advances in cloud computing and AI will need "significant investments in networks that have vastly improved capabilities," said chief executive Pekka Lundmark. "However, given the uncertain timing of the market recovery, we are now taking decisive action," he said. It said it wanted to "act quickly" by cutting costs by $422m in 2024, and $317m in 2025.

Fed Chair Powell: Slower economic growth may be needed to conquer stubbornly high inflation

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Thursday that inflation remains too high and that bringing it down to the Fed’s target level will likely require a slower-growing economy and job market.

Powell noted that inflation has cooled significantly from a year ago. But he cautioned that it’s not yet clear whether inflation is on a steady path back to the Fed’s 2% target.

“A few months of good data are only the beginning of what it will take to build confidence that inflation is moving down sustainably toward our goal,” Powell said in remarks to the Economic Club of New York. “We cannot yet know how long these lower readings will persist or where inflation will settle over coming quarters.”(...)

El ministro de Finanzas de Francia, Bruno Le Maire, intentará llegar a un acuerdo bilateral con su homólogo alemán, Christian Lindner, sobre las nuevas reglas europeas de déficit y deuda que sirva para desbloquear la negociación que los Veintisiete desean concluir antes de que acabe el año.

“Propondré continuar avanzando mano a mano entre Francia y Alemania. Todo el mundo sabe que al final un acuerdo sobre las nuevas reglas del Pacto de Estabilidad pasan por un acuerdo francoalemán”, expresó a los medios antes de participar en la reunión de ministros de Finanzas de la UE en Luxemburgo (Ecofin).
