Desde que aterrizó en la calle Hortaleza 63 tiene un objetivo claro, reivindicar el papel de los arquitectos en el diseño de las ciudades y las viviendas y que todos los arquitectos a los que él representa puedan vivir de su trabajo

Sigfrido Herráez Rodríguez (1964) fue reelegido decano del Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid (COAM) en mayo de 2022. Concejal del Ayuntamiento de Madrid entre 1991 y 2005, con José María Álvarez del Manzano, ha vivido en primera persona, tanto como arquitecto como concejal de Vivienda y presidente de la Empresa Municipal de la Vivienda (EMVS), la transformación de Madrid. Con sus aciertos y sus errores.

Entre sus últimas obras como arquitecto se encuentran el Hotel Marriot Auditorium Madrid, el Hotel Meliá Avenida de América o la dirección de obra de varias viviendas unifamiliares en el polígono Los Satélites, en Majadahonda. Aborrece el concepto de vivienda alquilada y apuesta por que Madrid se adapte a las nuevas necesidades de los hogares, especialmente de los jóvenes, expulsados actualmente del centro de las grandes ciudades.

Desde que aterrizó en la calle Hortaleza 63 tiene un objetivo claro, reivindicar el papel de los arquitectos en el diseño de las ciudades y las viviendas que se viven por fuera y por dentro, pero, sobre todo, que todos los arquitectos a los que él representa en estos momentos puedan vivir de su trabajo, ya que, actualmente, solo un tercio puede hacerlo. Entre los que se incluye. Por lo pronto, esta es su máxima prioridad.

PREGUNTA. En el sector inmobiliario se habla mucho de lo que quieren los fondos, de lo que quieren los promotores, las socimis, la Administración... Pero ¿qué quieren y qué necesitan los arquitectos en este nuevo ciclo inmobiliario?

RESPUESTA. Queremos trabajo. Ahora mismo, de los 11.000 colegiados que tenemos, aproximadamente somos 3.000 los que tenemos la suerte de tener clientes, de visar y, entre comillas, vivir de nuestro trabajo. Otros 3.000 hacen algún visado, pero no pueden vivir solo de esto, por lo que tienen algo complementario, una renta recurrente, apoyos familiares..., aquí se incluyen muchos jóvenes que están empezando. Por último, hay otro tercio del total, aproximadamente otros 3.000, que no visa.

(...) P. De cara al futuro, ha mencionado el tema de los Fondos Next Generation, rehabilitación, eficiencia energética, las nuevas necesidades de los hogares...

R. Coliving, senior living, cohousing... Todos esos son nichos, nichos en los que, sobre todo la gente joven, está entrando.

P. Pero, si tenemos en cuenta la nueva tipología de hogares que se están creando, el parque de viviendas ¿no se está quedando totalmente descatalogado?, ¿qué reto tiene la industria?

R. Yo creo que en eso Europa está yendo más rápido que España, porque los centros de las ciudades se están adecuando para la gente joven. Son mucho más ágiles, desde la Administración hasta el tejido empresarial que se dedica a hacer viviendas para jóvenes donde antes había una vivienda de 300 metros. En Madrid, en el barrio de Salamanca, hay un nicho de trabajo empresarial infinito en este aspecto, pero no hay un aparato empresarial y de arquitectura que sirva para eso. París en eso ha ido muy rápido y nosotros debemos tender a eso.

P. ¿A qué se refiere exactamente?

R. Vamos a hacer ese análisis con un poco de profundidad. Un piso de 300 metros en el barrio de Salamanca, en el que vive una pareja, propietaria del mismo. Los hijos ya se han ido. ¿Por qué no dividir esa vivienda en tres de 100 metros? Esa pareja va a vivir en una casa tres veces más pequeña, mucho más fácil de calentar, con todas las comodidades del siglo XXI y encima consigue dinero por los otros dos pisos que vende y que le dan para vivir el resto de su vida y con mucha comodidad. Por tanto, ahí hay una mejora social para esa pareja que se queda en el piso de 100 metros, pero también para las dos familias jóvenes que entran en las otras dos viviendas. Por su parte, el empresario consigue unos beneficios industriales lógicos. No hablamos de pelotazos, sino de un trabajo reiterativo, continuo y multitudinario. Esto, en las ciudades europeas va un poquito más rápido. Aquí, sin duda, es otro nicho de trabajo.

(...) P. ¿En qué soluciones está pensando?

R. Generalizar el coliving, el fraccionamiento de espacios... Hay cantidad de soluciones. En el norte de Europa, por ejemplo, se están haciendo edificios que en su conjunto tienen alquiler y venta, tienen jóvenes y mayores, además, pisos adecuados para eso y que son auténticas ciudades. El del puerto de Róterdam es un ejemplo. Esas realidades yo no digo que no sean una especie de experimento, pero a lo mejor van por ahí los tiros. Es decir, lo que hay que hacer es facilitar que la gente esté a gusto con lo que quiere hacer. Y el señor mayor que vive ahí, el joven que vive ahí, todos tienen su espacio de encuentro, su espacio privativo. Y yo creo que hay que pensar más soluciones, nos nos podemos quedar con el coliving y ya está, hay mil cosas más que vienen detrás.

Qué notable, siendo arquitecto estoy en sus antípodas. "Si lo único que hay para comer es mierda, entonces lo que hay que hacer es crear una escuela coprogastronómica, que además es vegana".

(Con esto no quiero decir que no hay mucho por hacer en los centros de las ciudades y que gran parte del parque residencial no responde a requerimientos actuales, pero es preocupante la cantidad de gente a la que las neo-corralas les parecen algo extremadamente cool.)

No soy architecto... precisamente, pero yo veo más bien, mierda enriquecida.

Hasta las asociaciones feministas le han dado la espalda y están de acuerdo con que si Sánchez consigue la investidura, el ministerio de igualdad (o sus competencias) lo tiene que llevar el PSOE.

Puedes tener ideología, puedes hasta ser un cabrón sectario. Pero tienes que conocer el sistema en el que te mueves o al menos tener asesores que lo conozcan por ti. Por eso a Podemas la han arrinconado y le han dado el mando a Díaz.

U.S mortgage rates soar to highest in more than 23 years

Oct 25 (Reuters) - The interest rate on the most popular U.S. home loan last week jumped to the highest since September 2000, marking its seventh straight weekly increase and driving mortgage applications to a 28-year low, a survey showed on Wednesday.

The 7.9% average contract rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage during the week ended Oct. 20 was up 20 basis points from the prior week, the Mortgage Bankers Association said.

"Mortgage activity continued to stall, with applications dipping to the slowest weekly pace since 1995," MBA vice president and deputy chief economist Joel Kan said. "These higher mortgage rates are keeping prospective homebuyers out of the market and continue to suppress refinance activity."

The cost of borrowing to buy a house has risen even as the Federal Reserve has put its inflation-fighting rate-hike campaign on pause, after lifting its benchmark policy rate from near zero in March 2022 to 5.25-5.50% in July of this year.

The 30-year fixed rate mortgage is up 81 basis points since then, tracking a similar rise in the yield on the 10-year Treasury note, the main benchmark for longer-term U.S. borrowing rates.

Ukraine exports 700,000 T grain via new Black Sea corridor – minister

About 700,000 metric tons of grain have been exported through Ukraine’s new Black Sea export corridor since it began operating in August, the Ukrainian agriculture minister said.

Ukraine launched a “humanitarian corridor” to release ships bound for African and Asian markets, and to circumvent a de facto blockade after Russia abandoned a deal this summer that had guaranteed its exports during the war.

A senior agricultural official said later that month it was considering using the route for grain shipments.

“During the operation of the new corridor, 38 ships entered the ports and more than 30 left, not all of them with grain, of course,” the agriculture ministry quoted Mykola Solsky as saying late on Monday.

“However, we managed to export almost 700,000 tons of grain.”

The export deal brokered by the United Nations and Turkey collapsed in July as Russia declined to recognise it, saying its demand that sanctions on its grain and fertiliser exports be lifted had not been met.

Ukraine had been exporting up to 3 million tons a month of food via the corridor while it was operating, with its total food exports, including alternative routes, reaching up to 6 million tons per month.

Solsky said that in September Ukraine had also exported 2.3 million tons of agricultural goods from small Ukrainian river ports on the Danube River. He said overall food exports totalled 3.6 million tons last month.

“We need to export about 6 million tons per month to preserve our agriculture as a key sector of the economy,” Solsky said.

This volume of transportation can only be ensured by restoring the full operation of the country’s deepwater ports in the Odesa region, he added.

“We see a trend towards an increase in the number of ships leaving our ports. We hope it will continue,” Solsky said.

Ukrainian agricultural producers this week said the new Black Sea corridor could enable exports of up to 2.5 million metric tons of food a month, almost offsetting the impact of Russia’s decision to quit the U.N.-brokered deal.

Ukraine’s shipping sources said more than 40 cargo vessels have entered the corridor so far.
Agriculture ministry data shows that as of Oct. 23, Ukrainian grain exports were down 29.7% at 8.3 million tons in the 2023/24 July-June season so far.

Ukraine is expected to harvest 79 million tons of grain and oilseed in 2023, with 2023/24 exportable volumes of about 50 million tons, agriculture ministry estimates.

SiFive Lays Off Hundreds of RISC-V Developers

SiFive, one of the key companies in the RISC-V ecosystem, is undergoing a significant restructuring marked by extensive layoffs and apparently a shift in business focus, reports More Than Moore. The company is seemingly retracting from its pre-designed core offerings, which means it may focus on custom cores instead. Meanwhile, the move casts uncertainty over SiFive's future in general along with its contributions to the RISC-V.

RISC-V has become quite a popular choice for making miniature low-cost cores, but there are several companies who are working on higher-performance RISC-V-based offerings. SiFive is one of such companies offering ready-to-use designs and also making custom cores based on what customers need. But now, SiFive has laid off somewhere between 100 to over 300 employees from around 700 in mid-October. Most of these were engineers, along with some sales and product personnel. Meanwhile, the company's leaders, including CEO Patrick Little, are still there.

SiFive issued the following statement to Tom's Hardware: "As we identify and focus on our greatest opportunities, SiFive is shifting to best meet our customers' fast-changing requirements by undergoing a strategic refocusing of all our global teams. Unfortunately, with this realignment, approximately 20% of employees across all different business groups and levels were impacted. The employees are receiving severance and outplacement assistance.

SiFive continues to be excited about the long-term opportunities for the company and for RISC-V. The growth of the company has never been stronger and the opportunities never better. Japanese Research is 'No Longer World Class'

Japan's contribution to world-class research continues to decline, despite having one of the world's largest research communities, according to a report by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), released in English on 25 October. From a report:

Masatsura Igami, the director of the Center for S&T Foresight and Indicators at the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP) in Tokyo, and one of the authors of the 2023 edition of the Japanese Science and Technology Indicators report, says that the findings highlight several areas that Japan could explore to improve its global standing. "Japan's current research environment is far from ideal and is unsustainable. The research environment must shape up," he says.

The report shows that Japan ranks third globally in the total number of researchers, following China and the United States. However, this workforce is not producing the same level of high-impact research as it was two decades ago. Japan's global share of research papers in the top 10% of most-cited articles has slipped from 6% to 2%, intensifying concerns in Japan about its dwindling international standing. Igami explains that the rest of the world has overtaken Japan in terms of quality research output. Some of the decline might be attributable to funding, Igami says. The 2023 report shows that research spending in the university sector has grown by roughly 80% in the United States and Germany, and 40% in France, has quadrupled in South Korea and has increased more than tenfold in China over the past two decades. By contrast, Japan's spending has increased by 10%.

However, even if researchers receive more funding, producing high-impact research might still be challenging, because Japanese scientists have less time for actual research, Igami says. According to a 2020 analysis by MEXT, the proportion of time that university researchers dedicated to science decreased from 47% to 33% between 2002 and 2018. [...] The report's findings confirm those of a previous survey of early-career researchers that pointed to a lack of time for research as a notable factor in job dissatisfaction.
